UWSC’s John Stevenson and Kerryann DiLoreto interviewed by Andrew Flowers, of Nate Silver’s FiveThirtyEight.com

A new article on FiveThirtyEight.com, “How We Undercounted Evictions By Asking The Wrong Questions,” underscores the critical role of UWSC in successfully executing Matt Desmond’s groundbreaking study on eviction in Milwaukee. Over many years and many projects, the UWSC has honed their strategies for achieving high response rates among hard-to-reach populations. That accumulated institutional knowledge is instilled in UWSC field interviewers, who carry out the hard work of collecting high-quality data on the ground. For the Milwaukee Area Renters Study (MARS), this door-to-door, or “shoe leather”, approach resulted in a greater than 80% response rate. The rigorous study has garnered national attention from policymakers, researchers, and the general public.
